How To Get Rid Of Black Ants

Black ants are one of the most annoying pests to get rid of. They can be found in your kitchen, bathroom, and even living room.

Black ants are small, but they’re also very resilient, which means you need to take extra care when getting rid of them or setting up traps. Luckily there are many ways you can get rid of black ants yourself so that you don’t have to call the exterminator every time they pop up again!

The methods can be classified into two categories: natural, and chemical methods.

How To Get Rid Of Black Ants

1. Natural Methods

Ants are an annoying problem that can be difficult to get rid of. While there are many commercial ant killers on the market, sometimes they contain harmful chemicals that can harm your household pets and children. The following tips will help you remove them naturally, and many of the options can be found in your own kitchen.

Black ants

Black Pepper

One of the things that black ants can’t stand is strong smells. Ants are sensitive to certain smells, and black pepper is a herb that contains one of the smells that can drive ants away. Ants use their natural pheromones to create trails for other ants in their colony to find food. This common cooking ingredient masks the natural pheromones ants produce, disrupting their search for food because they are unable to find the trail again.

You can mix black pepper powder with water to make a solution and spray it around areas you see the ants entering through, like baseboards. Although this will not kill the black ants, it will surely keep them away from areas of your home such as the kitchen. Also, note that this spray is only good for short-term use.

Salt and Chilli Powder

Ants hate salt just as much as they love things that taste sweet. Salt and other chili powders play the same role as black pepper in diverting black ants away from your home.

You can try using salt to prevent ants by sprinkling it around areas where you see them appearing. Another way is by filling an empty bottle with water and adding one teaspoon of salt. Shake the bottle well, then spray in areas where you see ants regularly appearing, such as around windowsills or near doors leading outside your home.

Vinegar

Vinegar, especially white vinegar, is an effective natural ant-repellent. Ants hate the smell of white vinegar and will avoid it at all costs. You can mix equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle and apply it directly to ant nests, or spray it on entrance areas of your home. Like black pepper, vinegar masks the scent of the ant’s pheromones, messing up their trail.

Peppermint

Peppermint is one of the best natural repellents you can use to get rid of ants. Peppermint oil has multiple uses and also has a strong smell that drives black ants away and can even kill them. Not only can you use it on ants, but this method is also effective against other bugs and pests too.

How To Use Peppermint Oil

Using this type of repellant for black ants is simple. Experts suggest mixing 10-15 drops of peppermint oil with two cups of lukewarm water. Put this solution in a spray bottle and spray in the vulnerable areas of your home such as baseboards, air vents, or any other small place you think they’re getting into your house through.

2. Chemicals Methods

The natural solutions are effective, but only till a certain point, and may not necessarily kill the ants. They can also take a long time to show results. If the infestation in your home is a serious one, and you are looking for quick methods to get rid of black ants, then try using the following chemicals.

Ant Spray

Ant spray is used to kill the ants once it makes contact with their bodies. It is formulated with special chemicals or natural oils that will kill the ants immediately after application so that there is no chance for them to spread or reproduce. You can also use this ant spray on both indoor and outdoor areas.

Baits/Traps

Ant baits are also effective at killing black ants and other bugs. Ant baits are the most common way to eliminate ants and work by luring in ants with a sweet-smelling bait. The ants then take the bait back to the nest, killing off other ants that try to eat it, and spreading poison throughout the nest.

Ant baits come in many forms: gel, liquid, or powder. Gel ant baits are usually poured into holes or cracks in the ground where you see ants, while liquid ant baits are poured into small containers and placed near areas where you’ve seen ants appear, trapping them in a small container.

Tips To Prevent Black Ants

The above tips can help you to remove black ant infestations from your home. However, you need to be proactive and take the following measures so that they do not come back.

  • Store food in airtight containers and wipe up crumbs on the kitchen counters. Black ants like to eat crumbs and carry them back to their nests for the rest of their colony.
  • Keep your trash can covered at all times. Black ants love garbage, so if there’s an open can of trash sitting around, they’ll be all over it!
  • Keep your home clean and free of clutter. Black ants like to make nests in small spaces where they won’t be disturbed by humans or pets.
