About
Mosquitoes
The mosquito is a common flying insect found around the world.
Although there are about 2,700 species of mosquitoes, the Anopheles
Mosquito is the primary type of mosquito we deal with in the
Memphis area.
A few good things to know about Mosquitoes that will
help you:
- Mosquitoes are most active from dusk to dawn
- Only the Female mosquito “bites” and sucks our
blood
- Male mosquitoes do not “bite”...they feed on
plant nectars
- Mosquitoes will fly up to 14 miles for a blood meal
- Mosquitoes breed in stagnant, standing water sources such
as storm drains, old tires, children's wading pools and birdbaths
- Mosquitoes can develop from egg to adult in 10 to 14 days
- Female mosquitoes can lay a “raft” of 50-300
eggs on the surface of a pond or standing water and hatch
within 2–3 days. The female requires a blood meal for
every batch of eggs she lays
- When a female mosquito “bites”, she applies
a small amount of saliva before drawing blood. The saliva
makes penetration of the skin easier and prevents the blood
from clotting
- The welts that appear after the mosquito “bites”
is not a reaction to the wound but an allergic reaction to
the saliva injected to prevent clotting
- Female mosquitoes use the CO2 we exhale as their primary
cue to our location
- Mosquitoes are relatively fragile insects with an adult
life span that lasts about 2 weeks
- Mosquitoes are the most formidable transmitters of disease
in the animal kingdom are known to spread diseases such as
West Nile Virus & malaria
- The Culex Mosquito carries the West Nile Virus and lives
and “feeds” high up (above 6 to 8 feet) in trees
where the birds are found. This mosquito does not come “down”
to feed and as a result we find birds in every corner of Shelby
County infected but conversely we have relatively few human
cases of West Nile compared to the distribution of the Culex
Mosquito
