| Every
yard is going to have weeds at one time or another! There is just
no way to avoid them!
Where do weeds seeds come from? It is truly amazing
how mobile weed seeds are. Below are a some of the reasons you
have weeds in your lawn:
- Already in the soil
- Bird droppings
- Shoes and clothing
- Drainage and water
- From your neighbors yard
- Air-born seeds
- Lawnmowers
- Pets and other animals
- And many other reasons!
Let’s look at a couple of weed facts. Did
you know that weed seeds can lay dormant in the soil for up to
10 years, and when the conditions become favorable they can germinate?
All they need is the right amount of sunlight and moisture.
Although we apply pre-emergent herbicides to halt the germination
of weed seeds, unfortunately there are some weeds that
are not affected by our pre-emergent and we must apply
a post-emergent for these difficult weeds...after they have germinated.
That means some special service visits may become necessary!
One of the best pre-emergents is a thick, green, healthy
turf! When your yard is very thick it will prevent sunlight
from reaching the weed seeds in the soil and will often prevent
weed seed germination!
Sometimes we wait a few extra days to mow our grass, and we start
to see weed seeds. When you cut it, what happens to those weed
seeds? They spread more weeds!
- Just one seed head at the top of one weed stalk can produce
hundreds of seeds.
- Multiply this times the number of those weeds you can see,
and pretty soon, your yard is full of weeds!
